Networking and developing new personal and professional relationships can be a challenge. Follow these ten networking tips to get you out of the corner and eventually into new relationships.
1. SMILE and Use Open Body Language
Whether you feel like it or not, smiling makes the best impression and presents you as being open for interaction. Smile and unfold those arms and welcome people in.
2. Be Present
Being a fly on the wall—albeit comfortable—won’t help you meet new people. If you are standing or sitting in a corner, move to the center and work around the room. Talk, think, and interact in the present moment. Stay out of the clouds.
3. Be on Purpose
Remember your purpose for networking. Is it to meet new business contacts, find new eating buddies, or just to pass the time away? What is your expectation?
4. Manage Talk Time
Don’t spend the entire time talking to one person. Enjoy genuine conversation and move on. If you have developed a quick rapport with an individual, you may return later.
5. Talk about Yourself and Your passions
You know best how to talk about the things you love. Talk about them. Focus on topics that you are passionate about and share. If you don’t share mutual interests with others, it is okay. Listen anyway. You might find something.
6. Don’t Talk about Yourself Too Much
It’s a fine line between being passionate and being proud. Talk about yourself, but let others do the same too.
7. Listen and Eavesdrop
The best way to have authentic conversations is to LISTEN. Do this often and you will be fine. Also eavesdrop on nearby conversations if you can. This is a great way to enter new conversations.
8. Follow Up
All this networking means nothing if you don’t follow up and foster the growth of new relationships. If you say you will contact someone…contact him or her.
9. Have Fun
Don’t take networking too seriously. Have fun. You might say something wrong or make a mistake, but we all will. Apologize and move on with the fun of it all.
10. Be Yourself
Remember to be your authentic self but better. Work and navigate the networking room in a spirit of excellence, courage, and purpose.
